Our next meeting is tomorrow, November 7th -- as previously announced, the main event is a beginner's Flex workshop led by Kalen Gibbons. We asked Kalen to write a brief bio to introduce himself:
I've been working with ColdFusion since 2004, although only part-time; mostly doing consulting jobs for supplemental income while making my way through college. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cal Poly Pomona last June with a degree in Computer Information Systems. At that time I started working at ESRI, where I've had the opportunity to work with ColdFusion and Flex more extensively. I'm passionate about programming and I hope to never stop learning and advancing my skills. That's why I feel blessed to be able to work every day with the technologies that I love.
We've also got a couple of updates:
First, barring unexpected difficulties, it looks like we will be able to provide a few workstations with Flex Builder installed (this is a requirement for the workshop). Please do bring a configured laptop if you are able to do so, but if this is not possible then you should still be able to participate. Anyone who does not want to join in on the hands-on portion is also welcome, of course -- come and watch, if you prefer.
Finally, the big software raffle just got a little more interesting. We're giving away a copy of the just-released CS4 suite(!), and we've decided to let the lucky winner choose which Premium edition they would like to receive. That's right folks, if you are the fortunate victor you will be awarded your choice of CS4 Design Premium, Production Premium or Web Premium!

Our very own Kalen Gibbons will be leading us to Flex World in our very first Flex Workshop. Below is his description for this beginner's workshop
It will cover basic Flex techniques and features; we will be creating a process performance monitor. I plan on supplying sample data, and although I will be covering how to connect to ColdFusion briefly, having ColdFusion installed will not be a requisite. There will be no ColdFusion involved, we will be skipping the back-end entirely to reduce possible configuration conflicts and other complications. The only thing required will be Flex Builder. I will be providing a series of sample files that we will be stepping through as we proceed through the workshop.
So don't miss our first ever Flex Workshop. Not only that, we will be raffling a spanking new copy of Adobe CS4 Web Premium edition. As always, we will have pizza and drinks. See you there.

Come join us this Friday, October 3rd, to get the inside scoop on all the new features in Creative Suite 4, Adobe's flagship collection of graphic design, web development and video editing applications. We've got some Adobe schwag to give away (although we're holding back the big prize for November), including a very handy ActionScript reference guide to help out with Flash/Flex/AIR development. Starting with this meeting, free pizza and soft drinks will also be provided, so be sure to bring your appetite!

In our november meeting, we will be discussing the possibility of switching days for our meetings. We are currently holding them the first Friday of the month and this causes problems in attendance. Dr. Westfall, our sponsor, has found out that we could meet either Tuesdays or Thursdays. So we need to be present at the next meeting, to decide or just post your comments on what day interests you the most. This new day, if changed, would start in our January Meeting of 2009.
On another note, to entices you slackers, we will be raffling a copy of CS4 in our november meeting. However, you have to be present in order to win it.

We had a great presentation by Gert Franz this past Friday at our CFUG. It was incredible to see all the new features of the up and coming Railo 3. Some features that the ColdFusion community have been asking for several years. I am really excited about the future path of Railo in combination of JBOSS. The future is definitely looking bright. We had a great attendance of 20 + people, we had a great time afterwards when we had our networking dinner at Chilis. I just want to thank Gert for a great presentation and all the group for their attendance.
Ogus Demirkapi posted some pictures for us in the Flickr stream.
